Supported by Rosneft, Doha hosts an exhibition of paintings of the Tretyakov Gallery “Russian Avant-Garde: Pioneers and Direct Descendants”

In the capital of Qatar, Doha, the grand opening of the exhibition of the State Tretyakov Gallery collection of paintings “Russian Avant-garde: Pioneers and Direct Descendants” was held. Rosneft Oil Company is the general partner of the event.

The exhibition, organized together with Qatar Museums and coincided with Qatar Russia 2018 Year of Culture 2018, is presented in the Fire Station art centre. The exhibition will be open until February 3, 2019.

The Tretyakov Gallery collection offers a special insight of the history of Russian art of the 20th century. The unique project presents the works of both the “pioneers” of the national avant-garde and their “direct descendants”. The works by Vladimir Tatlin, Alexander Rodchenko, Mikhail Matyushin, Mikhail Plaksin, Ivan Klyun – the pioneers of the Russian avant-garde, who determined the movement development in the first decades of the 20th century, are presented in the exhibition.

Moreover, for the first time, the exhibition presents the works of the “second wave” of the Russian avant-garde artists, who worked from the 1960s to 1980s, but received recognition only in the mid-1980s. These are works by Francisco Infante-Arana, Vyacheslav Koleichuk, Rimma Zanevskaya-Sapgir, Yuri Zlotnikov, Boris Turetsky, Edward Steinberg, Mikhail Roginsky and others.

Paintings and graphic arts, objects and photographs of avant-garde masters and their “descendants” from the Tretyakov Gallery collection are complemented by copies of the iconic masterpieces provided by the ROSIZO State Museum Exhibition Centre, the Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova Foundation and Dmitry Dimakov. In total, the exhibition presents 81 works by the Russian avant-garde artists.

The Minister of Culture of Qatar Salah Ben Gan Al Ali, the Ambassador of Russia in Qatar Nurmahmad Khokhlov, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Museums Ahmad Musa Al-Namla, Vice President for HR and Social Policy of Rosneft Yuri Kalinin, the General Director of the State Tretyakov Gallery Zelfira Tregulova and others took part in the grand opening of the exhibition.
