Rosneft Successfully Tests First Commercial Batch of Own Unique Hydrotreating Catalyst

RN-Kart, the specialised catalyst production enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company, has performed industrial tests of the first batch of hydrotreating catalysts, which provide for the production of Euro V-compliant diesel, at the Company’s Ufa group of refineries. This is the first hydrotreating agent capable to fully replace its foreign peers for the Russian refining industry.

The month-long tests have shown that the catalyst ensures the production of diesel compliant with all the latest technical requirements. The catalyst is equal to the world’s best analogues and in some respects even surpasses them.

Rosneft pays special attention to the development of its own production of catalyst agents for oil refining. It is the key area to ensure the technical stability of the Company’s downstream operations and reduce its dependence on imported technologies.

The new RN-Kart LLC plant is not only able to meet the demands of Rosneft enterprises for catalyst agents for hydrotreatment but can also deliver them for commercial sale. In addition, the plant’s products will replace foreign analogues, thus increasing the technological stability, independence, and economic efficiency of the entire oil refining industry of Russia.

Note for Editors:

In June 2019, Bashneft (an enterprise of Rosneft Group) bought the 51% stake in the charter capital of a privately-owned plant producing catalyst agents for hydrotreatment processes with a capacity of up to 4,000 tonnes per year in Sterlitamak.

The acquisition of the majority stake in the enterprise will provide Rosneft’s refineries with advanced Russian-manufactured hydrotreating catalyst agents.

Currently, the Company’s specialized subsidiaries play a key role in the development of the import substitution program for additives and catalyst agents production: The Angarsk Plant of Catalysts and Organic Synthesis, Novokuibyshevsk Catalyst Plant, as well as enterprises from the corporate Research and Development complex (Rosneft United Research and Development Centre and Russian National Research Institute for Oil Refinery), which develop and produce their own high-tech products for the oil-refining industry.

In 2018, the Company began using catalyst agents from the Angarsk Plant of Catalysts and Organic Synthesis in hydrogen production units at the Kuibyshev Refinery and Ryazan Oil Refining Company. Earlier, the same catalyst agents from Angarsk replaced foreign analogues of steam methane reforming in hydrogen production units at Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim, Bashneft-Novoil, and the Syzran Refinery. The share of own steam reforming catalyst agents in hydrogen production reached 77% at the Company’s refineries.

Moreover, the Company has conducted a successful test of reforming catalyst ПР-81D produced by the Angarsk Plant of Catalysts and Organic Synthesis. Due to the results obtained, this type of catalyst has become widely used at Rosneft’s refineries. Currently, the catalyst has been fruitfully applied at nine process facilities of the Kuibyshev Refinery, Syzran Refinery, Komsomolsk Refinery, and Ryazan Oil Refining Company. All catalytic reforming plants will switch to the internally-designed catalysts as soon as possible.

The Angarsk Plant of Catalysts and Organic Synthesis produces more than 50 grades of catalyst agents for various refining and petrochemical processes. The total capacity of the plant is about 450 tonnes per year, which provides for more than 30% of gasoline reformers at Russian enterprises and more than 60% at Rosneft’s refineries.

In December 2016, an advanced catalyst regeneration unit was put into operation at the Novokuibyshevk Catalyst Plant; it has a capacity of 4,000 tonnes per year for hydrotreating and hydrocracking processes used in the production of environmentally friendly motor fuels.
