Art Exhibition of 18th Century British Artist Thomas Gainsborough Opens in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts with Support by Rosneft
Rosneft has been the general sponsor of the art exhibition of Thomas Gainsborough, a brilliant portraitist and painter, the brightest and most original representative of his era, one of the founders of the British arts school of 18th century. More than 100 of his paintings and drawings, as well as archival materials, are exhibited in the main building of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
The Company has a history of cooperation with the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Among the most prominent joint projects, there is the Raphael exhibition “Raphael. The Poetry of the Image. Masterpieces from the Uffizi Galleries and other art collections of Italy” and the unique Japanese prints exhibition “Masterpieces of Edo Paintings and Prints”. Rosneft was also the general sponsor of the 34th international festival “December Nights of Sviatoslav Richter”.
Thomas Gainsborough’s (1727-1788) creative heritage is unique not only because of its artistic qualities but also because of the relatively small number of paintings that have survived in European collections. There are almost no works of British painters in the collections of Russian museums. Visitors to the exhibition organized with the support of Rosneft have a rare opportunity to discover the diverse facets of Thomas Gainsborough’s work.
The exhibits were provided by the National Gallery (London), the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate, the National Portrait Gallery (London), the Royal Academy of Arts, the Scottish National Gallery (Edinburgh), Gainsborough’s House (Sudbury), and the Art Museum (Bath).
Rosneft is active in supporting significant projects and events in the Russian culture. The Company provides with its sponsor support Shostakovich Philarmonic, Eifman Ballet Theatre, Sretensky Monastery Choir, and other music communities.
The Company’s aid ensured the tour of Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra across the cities of Russia and Great Britain in 2019. The BSFO consists of 86 young musicians representing the leading conservatories of the two countries.
In the cities of Japan, the Russian Cultural Festival, which is part of the Cross Year of Russia and Japan, is held in 2019 with the support of Rosneft. The Festival presented performances by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under the direction of conductor Valery Gergiev, pianist Daniel Kharitonov and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia, St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theatre of Boris Eifman, artists of the St. Petersburg Circus, and the Chamber Choir of Moscow Conservatory.
