Rosneft allocated 80 billion rubles for environmental protection over 2 years
On June 5th Rosneft celebrates World Environment Day. One of the main priorities of the Company is environmental protection and development of environmental technologies. Over the past two years, Rosneft’s green investments amounted to 80 billion rubles. The funds were allocated for implementation of key projects related to the rational use of associated petroleum gas (APG), improvement of reliability of pipelines, efficient management of water resources and waste, land reclamation, and conservation of biodiversity.
In 2018, the company approved a public position - “Rosneft: contribution to implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals”, reaffirming its commitment to high social and environmental standards. As part of the Rosneft-2022 strategy, the Company strives to achieve leadership in minimizing environmental impact and improving environmental friendliness of production, and also plans to become one of the leading international companies in terms of specific greenhouse gas emissions.
A key direction of Rosneft’s activities in the area of minimizing environmental impact is an increase of rational use of APG and reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions. The Company exceeded 90% level of APG utilization on mature assets. The volume of investments in the facilities of APG rational use for five years exceeded 125 billion rubles. Implementation of these major projects was awarded by the annual Kommersant Initiative Prize in the Ecology nomination.
Rosneft operates a pipeline network with a total length of more than 120 thousand km. In order to increase reliability of transportation of oil and oil products, the Company completed implementation of the 4-year Program of improvement of the reliability of pipelines. As a result, pipeline failure intensity decreased by 30% compared with 2013. Work in this area continues under a similar program designed for 2020-2025 .
Success of environmental protection activities of the Company is noted by independent organizations and ESG ratings. In 2020, Rosneft took a leading position among Russian companies in the international CDP rating in “climate” category with a “B” level. Also in 2019, Rosneft participated in the CDP rating for the first time in the water category and was highly rated at B-.
The Company implements a number of initiatives aimed at preserving ecosystems and biodiversity, and also develops cooperation with scientific and environmental organizations. Since 2012, Rosneft has carried out more than 20 comprehensive research expeditions to study the state of marine Arctic ecosystems.
Since 2015, the Company has been implementing a Program for conservation of biological diversity of marine ecosystems in licensed areas located in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. In 2019, this program reached the federal level and is now implemented with the support of the Russian Ministry of Nature.
In 2020, the Company's efforts will be focused on development of a comprehensive research program for study and monitoring of key species-indicators of the stable state of marine Arctic ecosystems (polar bear, walrus, white gull) and ecosystems of the northern territories of Siberia (wild reindeer).
Rosneft pays great attention to reforestation activities. In 2019, specialists of the Company's subsidiaries planted about 1 million trees, including about 5000 trees planted as part of the All-Russian Ecological Cleanup Day, Green Spring-2019.
Rosneft was the first in Russia to start producing and selling Euro 6 gasoline with improved environmental performance. Today, geography of sales has been expanded to nine regions where the retail network is managed by Rosneft. The Company also offers consumers a wide range of marine fuels with low sulfur content, which fully comply with the new requirements of the International Maritime Organization.
At the regional level, the subsidiaries of the Company actively interact with the state authorities on environmental safety issues, including implementation of joint environmental and educational campaigns. According to the results of the work, Samotlorneftegaz, Samaraneftegaz, Tomskneft VNK, Achinsky Oil Refinery, Angarsk Petrochemical Company, Komsomolsky Oil Refinery, Novokuybyshevsky Oil Refinery were awarded diplomas of winners of 15th Anniversary All-Russian Contest “Leader of Environmental Activities in Russia - 2019”.
Despite restrictions associated with the sanitary and epidemiological situation, the Company's enterprises are implementing activities for World Environment Day. In compliance with all precautions in the regions of the Company’s activities, community work days and territory landscaping events took place. Environmental service officers, together with the young specialists of Rosneft subsidiaries in the Samara region and representatives of local authorities, organized the environmental campaign “Tour of unknown springs of the Samara Region”, aimed to draw attention to the problem of pollution of the springs. Vostsibneftegas JSC, Bashneft-Polyus LLC, RN-Vostoknefteprodukt, RN-Rostovnefteprodukt, Kuybyshevsky Oil Refinery, Strezhevskaya Oil Refinery and other enterprises held children's contests of drawings and photos, aimed to draw attention to environmental issues and raise the level of environmental culture. Rosneft's enterprises are actively implementing the principles of the Green Office, aimed at reducing resource consumption, saving heat and electricity, improving the quality of working conditions and the environment.
