Messoyakhaneftegaz Implements Unique APG Utilization Scheme

Messoyakhaneftegaz, a joint venture of Gazprom Neft and Rosneft, has commissioned an underground gas storage facility at the West-Messoyakha license area. The project is being implemented according to a unique scheme: associated petroleum gas (APG) is injected into the undeveloped gas formations of the West-Messoyakha area from the East-Messoyakha area, the neighbouring field, which is already being developed.

To implement the project, the necessary infrastructure facilities were built on two areas of the Messoyakha cluster. Treatment and compression of gas from oil production at the East-Messoyakha is carried out at a compressor station with a capacity of 1.5 billion m3 per year. After treatment, the gas is fed into a pipeline about 50 km long and transported to the West-Messoyakha, where it is pumped into an underground storage area of 70 thousand m2. The project implementation will allow Messoyakhaneftegaz to raise the level of APG efficient use by 97%.

The construction of gas facilities has been underway since 2018. About 30 thousand tonnes of inventory and domestically produced equipment were delivered to the autonomous oilfield. Digital solutions have been used at the new facilities to control the safety and process parameters, including those remote from control centres in Tyumen and St. Petersburg.

To preserve the sensitive ecosystem of the polar region, a system of geotechnical monitoring was carried out, a compressor station and gas storage infrastructure were built on thermostabilized feet, the gas pipeline section under the Messoyakha river bed was made by directional drilling and has additional protection. The construction of infrastructure facilities using the block-modular assembly method at maximum factory readiness ensured high pace of construction.

Note for Editors:

The Messoyakha cluster includes the East-Messoyakha and West-Messoyakha fields located on the Gydan peninsula of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. The fields are recognised as unique in terms of the discovered hydrocarbon reserves. The project is being implemented with limited access to transport and production infrastructure. The licenses for both blocks are owned by Messoyakhaneftegaz, which is controlled on a parity basis by Rosneft and Gazprom Neft, the project operator.

The East-Messoyakha field was launched by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin during a video conference on September 21, 2016. The 2019 East-Messoyakha output amounted to 5.6 million tonnes of oil.
