Rosneft Discovers Third Unique Field in Kara Sea
Rosneft Oil Company has discovered a new Arctic gas field with the total reserves of 514 billion cubic metres of gas and 53 million tonnes of condensate, following exploratory and appraisal drilling on the Vostochno-Prinovozemelsky 2 license area in the Kara Sea. Pursuant to a decision of the State Commission, the field has been registered with the state. According to the current reserve classification, it is considered to be unique. The deposit, discovered in the year of the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, has been named after the great military commander Marshal Rokossovsky.
Earlier, the Company discovered the unique Marshal Zhukov field with gas deposits at 800 billion cubic metres, during the drilling on the Vikulovskaya structure (Vostochno-Prinovozemelsky 1 license area). The drilling was part of Rosneft Oil Company’s comprehensive programme to develop the region’s oil and gas potential.
The project had been commenced by President of Russia Vladimir Putin in 2014. The first wildcat, Universitetskaya-1, had resulted in the discovery of one of the world’s largest oil and gas fields, the Pobeda field. Its total recoverable reserves stand at some 130 million tonnes of oil and 422 billion cubic metres of gas.
Rosneft’s comprehensive drilling programme in the Kara Sea confirmed the high oil and gas potential of the structures under study and provided an opportunity to form a new oil and gas cluster in the area, including the three discovered fields with total estimated reserves exceeding 1.7 trillion cubic metres of gas and approximately 200 million tonnes of oil and condensate.
Overall, the Company identified more than 30 prospective structures in the three Vostochno-Prinovozemelsky areas of the Kara Sea. Rosneft intends to perform exploratory and appraisal drilling on the sites, thus continuing to develop the oil and gas potential of the Kara Sea.
