Ratio of Recycled Water in Rosneft Operations Reached 94% In 2020

In 2020, Rosneft brought the ratio of recycled and re-used water in its operations to 94%. This level has been exceeding 90% for the last 7 years.

Rosneft has been a member of the UN Global Compact for more than 10 years. In 2018, the Company confirmed its commitment to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Goals No. 6 Clean Water and Sanitation, and No. 12 Responsible Consumption and Production. The Company developed the Environmental Development Concept, which included approaches to sustainable water use. Within the framework of this document, Rosneft put an ambitious goal to reduce the use of «makeup»* water by 10% by 2030 with the increasing of its re-use and the effectiveness of purification.

Rosneft applies the circular economic principles in water use. In 2020, the Company continued implementing measures for reducing water use and the volumes of intake from natural sources and managed to reach the 7% cut.

Rosneft improves corporate processes of water use management consistently by using modern technologies of purification and safety of waters. The Company also contributes to the achievement of the national objectives of the Russian Federation until 2030 in terms of the improvement of water bodies. Under the trilateral agreement with the Ministry of Environment and the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources, Rosneft launched the facilities, improving water use management effectiveness and reducing water intake, at the Novokuibyshevsk refinery, the Novokuibyshevsk Oil and Additives Plant and Rospan International.

In the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim biological waste treatment plant--the largest in Eurasia, with a capacity of 84 cubic metres and using membrane bioreactor technology--has been commissioned and is successfully operating. The facilities treat industrial and rain waters and wastewaters from Bashneft's refineries and 66 enterprises of the region.

The facilities have significantly improved the quality of wastewater purification and increased the use of purified water in the manufacturing process, which reduces the amount of water taken from water bodies by 2.5 times. Since the launch, Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim waste treatment plants purified 65 million cubic metres of wastewaters.
