September 7 - International Clear Air Day
Every year on September 7, International Clean Air Day is celebrated to raise public awareness of the impact on the atmosphere. The commemorative date was established by the UN General Assembly in 2019 to join forces against changing air quality.
Responsible attitude towards the environment is an integral part of the Company's corporate culture and one of the key principles of its business. Rosneft has been a member of the UN Global Compact for more than 10 years and in 2018 reaffirmed its commitment to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Already today, Rosneft is ahead of many majors when it comes to regulating greenhouse gas emissions. In 2020, the Company reduced its air emissions by 14%, including through the implementation of the Investment Gas Program aimed at increasing the beneficial use of associated petroleum gas.
As part of the gas program, Rosneft plans to achieve an APG utilisation rate of over 95% in the next few years. For several key Group companies, this indicator has already exceeded the target level, including Samotlorneftegaz, RN-Vankor, RN-Purneftegaz, Kharampurneftegaz, Severnoye Chayvo, Bashneft-Dobycha, Sorovskneft and others.
Rosneft gives top priority to reducing emissions of methane that produces a greenhouse effect about 28 times stronger than carbon dioxide. In 2019, the Company joined the initiative of the world's leading oil and gas companies by signing "The Guidelines for Methane Emission Reduction in Natural Gas Supply Chain."
Furthermore, Rosneft pays great attention to reforestation activities. By planting young trees every year in the regions where it operates, the Company is making a significant contribution to absorbing greenhouse gas emissions by forests. Rosneft has already planted more than 4 million seedlings and trees during 2021.
The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production. At the end of 2020, Rosneft presented its Carbon Management Plan 2035, becoming the first company in Russia to announce such long-term emissions management targets. The Plan includes reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 20 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, a 30% reduction in the emission intensity of oil and gas production, a decrease in the methane emission intensity below 0.25%, and zero routine flaring of associated gas.
The company collaborates with foreign companies on emissions management. Back in February, Rosneft signed a Carbon Management and Sustainability Cooperation Agreement with BP. A similar agreement was signed in June with Baker Hughes.
Rosneft is recognised as the leading Russian oil and gas producer in several international ESG ratings, including Refinitiv and Bloomberg. Sustainalytics, an international agency, improved the Company's ranking in its rating twice in April 2021. With a score of 33.9, Rosneft became the leader among Russian oil and gas companies. FTSE Russell, a division of the London Stock Exchange, re-listed the Company as a member of the FTSE4Good Index Series, a biannual update group of international stock exchange indices. Rosneft outperforms 90% of international oil and gas industry participants in the ICB supersector, with a rating of 3.9 out of 5.
