Samotlorneftegaz Remediates More than 150 Hectares of Heritage Land
Samotlorneftegaz, an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company’s oil production complex, has cleared 154 hectares of historical heritage land (accumulated during the Soviet period) as a result of land remediation activities implemented in 2021. The enterprise has restored more than 1,300 hectares of land disturbed in the past from 2015 to 2020.
In order to achieve the best performance and the strategic goal in environmental protection defined in the Rosneft 2022 Strategy, the Company improves approaches to environmental management, increases the scale of environmental measures and the necessary investments for these purposes.
The enterprise uses modern methods and equipment in the process of land remediation, which help improve the efficiency of work in the natural and climatic conditions of Siberia.
Samotlorneftegaz was the first in Russia to use the winter remediation technology. This method enables year-round natural remediation activities to be implemented in the swampy terrain of the Nizhnevartovsk district. Swamps and lakes occupy more than 60% of Samotlorneftegaz’s licence areas. About 70% of technical work is currently conducted precisely during periods of sub-zero temperatures and stable snow cover.
The practice of winter sowing of perennial grasses, approved by Samotlorneftegaz ecologists, also improves the quality of natural remediation activities. This method has already proved effective in the short northern summer.
All stages of land remediation are performed using modern, high-performance machinery. The environmental services have more than 70 units of unique special equipment at their disposal: amphibious excavators, large-capacity all-terrain vehicles, floating swamp vehicles, snowmobiles and small all-terrain vehicles. Three additional amphibious vehicles have been purchased this year to work in areas with a high degree of wetlands.
Standing up to environment-oriented tasks is one of the enterprise’s priorities. Samotlorneftegaz pays particular attention to forest conservation and the maintenance of water biodiversity. In 2021, the enterprise has planted 350,000 coniferous seedlings on a total area of 80 hectares in Yugra and released 1.9 million fry of valuable fish species into the Ob-Irtysh and Yenisei basins.
Note for Editors:
Samotlorneftegaz is one of Rosneft’s main production enterprises. The scope of its license areas exceeds 3,000 square kilometres. The enterprise’s cumulative production is over 2.8 billion tonnes of oil and 400 billion cubic metres of gas.
The enterprise is developing the Samotlor field, the largest in Russia. Its commercial development began in 1969, which explains the amount of heritage land in the enterprise’s licence areas.
