Rosneft Employees Cleaned 116,000 m2 of Coastal Areas for Volga Day
Rosneft’s enterprises in the Volga Federal District held an environmental campaign to clean up coastal areas on Volga Day. Employees of the enterprises cleaned 116,000 m2 of the main Russian river banks, collected and removed more than 10 tons of waste brought by the river current.
More than 300 employees of Rosneft’s Samara group of plants — Novokuibyshevsk Refinery, Kuibyshev Refinery, Syzran Refinery, Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company, as well as Samaraneftegaz, SamaraNIPIneft and Saratov Refinery — took part in the campaign. All the waste collected — PET containers, glass, cardboard, metal — was sorted then sent for recycling.
Environmental volunteering is an integral part of the ongoing environment-oriented initiatives of Rosneft’s subsidiaries. The Samara group of enterprises has been running volunteer campaigns for several years to collect plastic lids, waste paper and batteries.
By implementing environmental programmes and applying new technologies, Rosneft’s enterprises make a significant contribution to the conservation of Volga Region’s water resources. Since 2016, Samaraneftegaz has completely stopped taking water from natural sources to maintain overburden pressure and does not discharge effluents into water bodies.
As part of its refinery modernisation programme, Rosneft has constructed new or upgraded existing water treatment facilities, which will increase the share of recycled water to 94-100%.
The Novokuybyshevsk, Kuybyshev and Syzran Refineries--are actively implementing innovative biological wastewater treatment complexes as a part of the treatment facilities reconstruction. These include the most advanced membrane bioreactor technology using sealed aero tanks, which significantly improves the quality of wastewater treatment and increases the use of treated water in technological processes.
At the Novokuibyshevsk refinery, the recycled water share is 95%. The enterprise has reduced its river water intake by 10.6% over the last three years. The mechanical and physical-mechanical wastewater treatment units are currently being upgraded.
The Syzran refinery continues to modernise its recycling water supply system by reconstructing two sections that provide cooling and water supply to process units. Currently 100% of the plant’s wastewater discharged into surface water bodies is regulatory clean.
The Syzran Refinery commissioned a mobile environmental water and soil monitoring station in 2021. The mobile laboratory is equiped with modern equipment that allows to assess on-site the quality of natural, waste, circulating water, to take soil samples in accordance with current standards, and to determine with high accuracy the physicochemical properties of water and soil.
The Kuibyshev refinery has reduced its consumption of water from natural sources by 24% over the past six years. To this end, the recycling water supply units and water intake were reconstructed.
The Saratov Refinery has reduced the amount of wastewater by 29% over the past three years by increasing its reuse.
Rosneft’s plants are making a significant contribution to reducing the environmental impact of Volga vessels. The Syzran refinery has significantly increased production of the highly environmentally friendly marine fuel RMLS 40 in 2021. The Novokuibyshevsk refinery has increased production of environmentally friendly TMS type A fuel for river and sea vessels. Oil products quality is fully compliant with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
For over a decade, efforts have been made to replenish aquatic bioresources to conserve biodiversity and increase the population of fish fauna. About 1.3 million fish fry of valuable species such as sterlet, carp and silver carp were released into the Volga by enterprises of the Samara area between 2020 and 2021.
Employees of Rosneft subsidiaries are active participants in cleaning up riverbanks, reservoirs and springs. In 2021, the Samara Group production enterprises held the Samara Region Springs environmental campaign to restore natural sources of water and improve the surrounding area.
Samaraneftegaz has for many years been helping municipalities to resolve issues related to the restoration and development of natural water sources as part of a socio-economic partnership. Such projects have been implemented in eight districts of the region.
The effectiveness of the environmental policy of Rosneft’s enterprises in Volga Federal District has been repeatedly recognized at regional and national competitions. The enterprises became winners of the Leader of Environmental Protection in Russia competition in 2018 through 2021.
