Vostsibneftegaz Provides Traditional Grant Support to Scientists

The East Siberian Oil and Gas Company, an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company, has awarded annual grants to Krasnoyarsk scientists to support environmental and ethnographic projects of applied importance to the Evenki municipal district of Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The Vostsibneftegaz grant programme involves research teams from leading Siberian universities, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and state nature reserves. Most of the projects submitted focus on the study of individual animal and bird species, as well as on the conservation of unique ecosystems in the taiga zone of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The Central Siberian State Nature Reserve won grants in 2022 to study the Siberian sable and musk deer in the Evenki district. Sable is one of the main commercial species in Eastern Siberia, and the state of its population directly affects the economic well-being of tribal communities carrying out traditional activities in the region. The musk deer is an extremely rare and poorly studied species of reindeer possessing medicinal musk. Ecologists will study the current state of the sable population and provide practical recommendations for the conservation and rational use of the species. Photo traps will be set up in places where musk deer will be encountered, and maps will be drawn up of their proposed locations.

The Tunguski Nature Reserve has submitted a project to study the red deer, whose individuals have become more common in the southern part of the Evenki district. The northern taiga is not a typical habitat for the red deer. Scientists plan to investigate the combination of factors that enabled the red deer as a species to spread to new territories, as well as identifying the scale of the phenomenon.

The Siberian Federal University presented a project to preserve the unique cultural heritage of the Keto peoples. Scientists plan to organise materials on the cultural heritage of a unique people, the last representative of the Yenisei group, including folklore and images of arts and crafts. Based on the materials collected, create an educational course for a school in Baikit village where Keto children are educated.
