Rosneft Celebrates International Clean Air Day

The International Clean Air Day is celebrated on September 7 to raise public awareness of the impact on the atmosphere. The 2022 key theme is «The Air We Breathe», highlighting the need for international and regional cooperation for cross-border measures to keep the atmosphere clean.

Responsible attitude towards the environment is an integral part of the Company’s corporate culture and one of the key principles of its business. Rosneft has been a member of the UN Global Compact for more than 10 years and in 2018 reaffirmed its commitment to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Climate Action is one of the priority goals for the Company.

At the end of 2021, the Company’s Board of Directors approved the Rosneft-2030: Reliable Energy and Global Energy Transition strategy, which was based on the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 for Scope 1 and 2. This will be possible through the implementation of a number of strategic initiatives, including: significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, achieving zero routine flaring of associated petroleum gas and reducing methane emissions intensity to less than 0.2% by 2030, gradual conversion of the Company’s own transport to low-carbon fuels, etc.

Since 2018, the Company has channelled more than 200 billion roubles in green investments to improve its business and minimise its environmental footprint as part of its development strategy, with green investments of around 55 billion roubles in 2021.

Rosneft focuses on reducing methane emissions, a greenhouse gas whose specific impact potential is tens of times greater than that of CO2. The Company’s enterprises monitor methane emission sources using unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with laser scanners and video cameras. Ground-based monitoring methods are also being introduced.

Reducing atmospheric emissions is another important area of the Company’s activities. In 2021, the total mass of pollutant emissions was reduced by 12%. The results have been achieved through an integrated approach in the implementation of a number of corporate programmes involving the timely development, adjustment and implementation of investment projects to create environmental infrastructure facilities: the purchase and installation of environmental equipment, an inventory of pollutant emission sources and other measures.

In line with the principles of environmental information transparency, Rosneft’s subsidiaries have been installing urban eco-monitors – special LED screens broadcasting 24-hour air condition data in the sanitary protection zone of enterprises. The information for the monitors is generated by processing the results of measurements from automated fixed monitoring stations.

Rosneft has traditionally paid great attention to the conservation and restoration of natural resources, including forested areas. Forest plantations help to clean the air and are a natural sequester of greenhouse gases. The Company and its subsidiaries planted around 9.3 million tree seedlings of various species in 2021.

To achieve its strategic goal of reducing its carbon footprint, the Company has made extensive preparations and, in June 2022, launched a unique integrated environmental forestation project in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, which will provide carbon sequestration of 10 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent.

In addition, as part of the 7th Eastern Economic Forum, Rosneft signed an agreement with the Siberian Federal University to carry out research and development (R&D) to provide methodological support for the environmental forestation project.
