Moss Ground Opens in Apothecary Garden Supported by Rosneft

With the support of Rosneft and Innopraktika, one of Russia’s largest Moss Ground opened in MSU’s Apothecary Garden. The unique exhibition features more than 40 species of midland mosses, including rare and endangered species.

Preservation of the environment is an integral part of the corporate culture of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production, implements several comprehensive programmes for the preservation and restoration of natural resources.

The Moss Ground will be part of the tour route around the Apothecary Garden. The exhibit is an exact imitation of a forest stream – a real micro-landscape with micro-waterfalls, stones and snags. The exhibit, created with the help of botanical experts, is designed in such a way that visitors can see the mosses in great detail.

The Moss Ground is open daily from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at 26/1 Prospekt Mira, Moscow.

Note for Editors:

Mosses are a large group of plants, including over 20,000 species. They have no roots, no flowers and no conductive system. Mosses are extremely important to ecosystems: they regulate the water regime, store organic matter in the form of peat, and maintain the balance of oxygen in the atmosphere.

The MSU Apothecary Garden is a historical and cultural monument in Moscow and the oldest botanical garden in Russia. The apothecary garden was established in 1706 by decree of Peter the Great to cultivate medicinal plants. The plants grown in the garden were used not only to prepare medicines, but also to teach botany to medical students. More than 400,000 people visit the MSU Aptekarsky Garden each year.
