Rosneft Sends More Than 190 Tonnes of Waste Paper for Recycling
In 2022, Rosneft’s enterprises submitted more than 190 tonnes of waste paper for recycling. This amount, ecologists estimate, is equivalent to 3,000 trees, which would require 200,000 kW of electricity and 3,800 cubic metres of water to treat.
The top paper and cardboard collectors were employees of the Ryazan Oil Refining Company (34 tonnes), Achinsk Refinery (over 23 tonnes), Kuibyshev Refinery (over 17 tonnes) and RN-Vankor (16 tonnes).
In 2022, the initiative of the Company’s employees helped to conserve 19 hectares of forest and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 51 tonnes.
Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture and business operations of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production. Affirming its commitment to achieving sustainability goals, Rosneft implements projects every year that contribute to the transition to a circular economy*.
At the Syzran Refinery, for example, paper recycling events are held twice a year, on Ecologist’s Day and Paper Waste Day. There are special containers for separate collection of waste paper and plastic in the workshops and divisions of the refinery.
In 2022, employees of the East Siberian Branch of RN-Burenie collected almost 400 kg of unclaimed paper, cardboard, books and magazines for recycling as part of the Plus 1 corporate challenge.
On the eve of International Paperless Day, RN-Vankor held a Paper Boom event, during which about 360 kg of recyclables were collected.
Eco-boxes were installed in RN-Uvatneftegaz’ buildings and each of them was provided with a leaflet on how to dispose of documents. Once shredded, the paper and cardboard are sent to specialised plants for recycling.
At Orenburgneft, more and more employees are joining the paper collection campaign. In 2022, they managed to collect more than 8 tonnes of waste paper in a joint effort.
RN-BashNIPiNeft has been running its separate waste collection programme since 2016. In 2022, the institute contributed 3 tonnes for recycling, as did Udmurtneft employees.
The Novokuibyshevsk Refinery is actively implementing the principles of the Green Office programme, reducing its use of paper every year.
Rosneft has a long tradition of giving priority to the conservation and restoration of forested areas, which are natural sinks for greenhouse gases. In 2022, the Company and its enterprises planted more than 7.5 million trees of various species. In addition, Rosneft launched a large-scale environmental forestation project in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The project was approved by the President of the Russian Federation and involves a whole range of forestry measures with a total sequestration potential of 10 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent.
* A circular economy aims to change the classic linear model of production by focusing on products and services that minimise waste and other types of pollution.
