Samotlorneftegaz Reclaims Over 120 Hectares of «Historic Heritage» Land in 2022

Samotlorneftegaz, part of Rosneft’s oil and gas production complex, reclaimed 126 hectares of «historical heritage» in 2022. The enterprise has restored the biological productivity of the soil on 90% of the land disturbed by the previous owners.

In order to achieve the best performance in environmental protection, defined in the Rosneft 2030 Strategy, the Company improves approaches to environmental management, increases the scale of environmental measures and the necessary investments.

Samotlorneftegaz ecologists have developed a base of unique methods and technologies for carrying out a range of reclamation activities in northern latitude conditions. The enterprise carries out 85% of its work with its own environmental service, which has over 70 pieces of specialised equipment for working in areas with high levels of mud, including amphibious excavators on pontoon tracked chassis, multi-purpose snow ploughs of various modifications and small transporters with high manoeuvrability.

Samotlorneftegaz was the first enterprise in Russia to introduce winter reclamation technology for use in wetlands. The method has enabled ecologists to carry out restoration work throughout the year. Around 70% of this work is currently organised in sub-zero temperatures. Restoration of disturbed land takes a landscape approach: work is based on site characteristics, soil composition and the hydrological condition of water bodies.

Samotlorneftegaz carries out the biological phase of reclamation – with phytomelioration measures during the cold season. In 90% of the areas that are difficult to access during the warm season, winter sowing is used. Plants grown in the soil and climatic conditions of Western Siberia are selected to produce a sustainable herbaceous stand. This agricultural technique will be applied to an area of 5.9 hectares of «historical heritage» land in 2023. Since the beginning of 2023, Samotlorneftegaz ecologists have been reclaiming 46 hectares of land damaged in the 1970s and 1980s.

Samotlorneftegaz’s active approach to environmental protection was highly commended by the experts of the All-Russian Environmental Protection Leader Russia-2022 competition. The enterprise was awarded a diploma in the category «Best Environmentally Responsible Company in Oil and Gas Production».
