Rosneft Improves Waterflooding Technologies

Rosneft specialists have developed the MUZA (the Injected Agent Control Module) software to control waterflooding at the fields. The new IT product reduces costs for water treatment, electricity and other processes related to water injection, and increases oil recovery.

Rosneft is the first Russian oil company to have successfully created in-house software to address operational challenges in geology, engineering, development and field operations. Corporate software products guarantee technological safety and efficiency of solutions through the use of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence methods. The Company's software is far superior to its foreign counterparts in terms of technical performance at a lower cost.

The MUZA algorithms analyse reservoir pressure indicators, as well as the volumes of injected and produced fluids during oil production. The programme not only «identifies» problem areas and suggests where and what needs to be changed, but also prioritises the recommendations generated.

The Company's specialists have developed software for the features of the unique Prirazlomnoye field*, where more than a thousand injection wells are operated. Large injection volumes of 25 million cubic metres of water per year, as well as a significant area where oil deposits are being developed, are typical features of the field. The optimisation programme generated by MUZA allowed to redirect the injected water flows, which significantly increased the potential for implementing geological and engineering operations.

MUZA is currently integrating into the Company's overall line of IT products, which implements the full cycle of digital modelling — from planning to interpretation of results and technical and economic evaluation of the project.

*Prirazlomnoye is one of the largest fields in Western Siberia with initial geological oil reserves of more than 2 billion tonnes and recoverable reserves of more than 0.5 billion tonnes, which makes it a unique field. Complex geological structure is a specific feature of the field: low permeability of productive strata, high degree of variability of filtration-capacity properties.
