RN-Purneftegaz Launches First Applied Research Grant Programme for Yamal Indigenous Peoples

RN-Purneftegaz (part of Rosneft’s oil and gas production complex) summarised the results of the first grant competition to support scientific, practical, applied, educational and research projects aimed at addressing social issues of the indigenous peoples of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District living in the Purovsky District.

Preservation of the culture and way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North is one of the key areas of Rosneft’s social policy. Support from oil companies improves the living conditions of many indigenous families living in the areas where the Company’s production activities take place.

The RN-Purneftegaz grant programme will help preserve the traditional way of life and unique culture of the indigenous people of the North.

The first grant will support a project of the Kharampurovskaya Agricultural Community, which employs Forest Nenets living in the national village of Kharampur. By the end of the year, the project will provide fish farms with equipment for the artificial rearing of valuable commercial fish species – rainbow trout, muksun, broad whitefish, nelma and northern whitefish. The project will help to conserve biological and species diversity and replenish valuable salmon and whitefish species in the Pur-Taz river basin, which play a key role in the economic livelihoods of the Nenets forest people. The Pur is the largest river in the Purovsky district; its length, together with its upper tributaries, exceeds 1,000 km and its catchment area is 112,000 km2.

Another grant was received from the Purovsky district administration to support the development of nomadic education. The project aims to conduct a research study on the education of pre-school children living in the camps. Yamal is developing the practice of preparing children for school directly where the families live and work – in nomadic kindergartens. На сегодняшний день в тундре проживают около тысячи детей в возрасте до семи лет, которым необходимо организовать дошкольное обучение непосредственно в стойбищах. The project will make it possible to consider all nomadic tundra children and to choose new forms and methods of organising pre-school education.
