Environmentalists supported by Vostsibneftegas assessed the ability of Evenkiya forest to restore

Under the grant program of Vostsibneftegas (a member of Rosneft Oil Company), scientists of the Federal Research Center “Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center SB RAS” studied the ability of Evenkiya forest to restore.

Preserving the environment for future generations is one of Rosneft's priorities. The Company implements a number of large-scale environmental programs and is the leader in minimizing its environmental impact.

Forests have an important function of absorbing carbon dioxide. Against the backdrop of the global environmental agenda, environmentalists are paying close attention to studying the state of vegetation cover.

The scientists studied the territory of Evenkiya with an area of about 80 million hectares, of which 63 million hectares are covered with forest. In the course of their work, they mapped fire-induced zones that emerged during the period from 2001 to 2022, and created maps of forest productivity.

Specialists have determined the relationship between forest fires and eco-climatic factors in the zones of the Central Siberian Plateau. While the average amount of precipitation remains the same, the increase in air temperature leads to a decrease in soil and air moisture. The combination of these factors leads to an increase in the number and area of wildfires.

At the same time, environmentalists have found that there is a relatively rapid regrowth of vegetation at the sites of forest fires. Thus, global warming leads to an increase in forest biomass. The results obtained indicate that the forests of Evenkiya retain their carbon-depositing role.
