Rosneft Celebrates International Clean Air Day

International Clean Air Day is celebrated on September 7. The key theme for 2023 is “Together for Clean Air”, which highlights the need to strengthen partnerships and increase investment to improve air quality.

Responsible attitude towards the environment is an integral part of Rosneft Oil Company’s corporate culture and one of the key principles of its business. The Company has been a member of the UN Global Compact for more than 10 years, reaffirming its commitment to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Company’s long-term environmental agenda is based on the Rosneft-2030 Strategy and the Environmental Vision 2035. One of Rosneft’s priorities is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Rosneft also pays particular attention to reducing methane emissions, with their specific potential impact on global warming being 25 times that of carbon dioxide.

The Company’s total GHG emission reduction over the last three years was 11% compared to 2020. This was made possible in part by the implementation of the Gas Investment Programme, which aims to increase the recovery of associated petroleum gas (APG).

In 2022, Samotlorneftegaz increased APG utilisation to an all-time high of – 99%. This is one of the best results in the industry. Strong results were achieved thanks to a well-developed gas infrastructure. The enterprise is also implementing best practices for monitoring methane emission sources. Samotlor was the first to use a range of innovative technologies to detect and locate unorganised sources of methane emissions.

The enterprise develops and implements advanced proprietary technologies to reduce its environmental impact, including the reduction of emissions to air. R&D costs with an environmental impact in 2022 amount to 222 million roubles.

The Company’s subsidiaries also contribute to the federal government’s Clean Air Project and implement various environmental projects to improve air quality.

For example, by modernising the production facilities at the Komsomolsk refinery, including the primary oil refining units, introducing digital process management and implementing projects to improve operational efficiency, the Company has reduced air pollution by 7% over three years.

In addition, Rosneft supplies natural gas to the Sverdlovsk region, ensuring a stable supply of heat to consumers. The conversion of boiler houses to natural gas significantly reduces emissions into the air. Under the 2023 concession agreement, the Company will operate 25 municipal boiler houses, 22 pumping stations and 224 km of heating networks in Nizhny Tagil, the region’s second largest city. Five new boiler houses are also under construction in Nizhny Tagil.

Rosneft has traditionally paid great attention to the conservation and restoration of natural resources, including forested areas. Forest plantations help to clean the air and are a natural sequester of greenhouse gases. The Company and its subsidiaries planted more than 18 million seedlings of trees of various species in the regions where it operates in 2020-2022.
