Tyumen Scientists Identify New Habitat for Rare Birds with Rosneft Support

Scientists from Tyumen State University have identified the habitats of more than 60 bird species, including five specially protected species, in the Tyumen region as part of the grant programme of RN-Uvatneftegaz (part of Rosneft’s oil and gas production complex).

Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture of Rosneft. The Company’s subsidiaries implement various programmes to conserve and restore natural resources in the regions where they operate.

In 2022-2023, during the period of active bird nesting, Tyumen scientists conducted field expeditions to study the area in the Irtysh river valley in the south of the Uvat district. The survey recorded the habitats of the white-tailed eagle, great crested eagle, osprey, grey magpie and colonies of the Russian Red-tailed merlin. Ornithologists have also noted the expansion of the Blackbird’s habitat and for the first time have recorded the fact that it nests in the south of the Tyumen region.

Together with ecologists from RN-Uvatneftegaz, the scientists installed biotechnical equipment in the Uvat district, which is an important prerequisite for increasing the number of rare bird species.

Ornithologists will map the nesting of rare bird species and make recommendations to increase their numbers.

The RN-Uvatneftegaz grant programme is of applied significance for the region. In 2022, the enterprise launched a project to study and protect the forest reindeer population in the Uvat district. Birds are an important part of the Tyumen taiga ecosystem, and deer are an indicator species. RN-Uvatneftegaz also supported the publication of the first-ever book on the region’s protected areas and the red-listed birds and animals that inhabit them.
