Rosneft Volunteers Planted Cedars on The Shore of Lake Baikal

Volunteers of Angarsk Petrochemical Company (an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company’s refining complex) planted about 150 cedar seedlings on the coastal territory of Lake Baikal.

The event was held within the framework of the federal project on forest restoration in cooperation with the joint directorate of specially protected natural areas of federal importance «Zapovednoe Pribaikalye».

Environmental protection for future generations is a priority for Rosneft. The Company runs a number of extensive environmental programmes and maintains a leading position in minimising its environmental footprint and making its operations environmentally friendly.

60 employees of Angarsk Petrochemical Company and their family members took part in the event. Before planting the cedars, volunteers cleaned the area in the firebreak of trash and deadwood to prevent the wildfire in the forest. The new cedars, which is one of the largest conifers, will help preserve the shoreline’s soil cover and maintain the water balance of the world’s deepest lake. Cedar forests are home to many species of animals, including rare ones. Volunteers also set up a gazebo for campers to rest.

The environmental campaign was held on a section of the tourist route «Baikal Port — Angara source», which is annually visited by thousands of travelers. The 120-year-old lighthouse, the Orthodox church, the White Stone lookout and other attractions are very popular with tourists visiting Baikal. Forest restoration will reduce the anthropogenic impact on the coastal area.

Environmental volunteering is one of the key areas of Angarsk Petrochemical Company’s environmental activities. The company’s employees annually take part in various campaigns to restore natural resources, collect plastic and waste batteries. Angarsk petrochemists also organize mass clean-up days, eco-runs, and work to familiarize the younger generation with environmental culture.

Active environmental activities of the enterprise have been recognized with awards of various levels. Angarsk Petrochemical Company  was twice among the winners of the  the All-Russian Environmental Leader competition and became a laureate of the All-Russian Contest of Best Environmental Practices «Reliable Partner in Ecology». Angarsk Petrochemical Company’s sanitary lab took the second place in the All-Russian contest «Golden Z-Index» in the nomination «Water and air objects».
