Rosneft Backs Educational and Ethnographic Projects in Evenkia
The East Siberian Oil and Gas Company and Slavneft-Krasnoyarskneftegaz (Rosneft subsidiaries) organised a competition and granted new subsidies to support initiatives of practical significance for the Evenk District of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Projects with a focus on the preservation of the region's rich natural and cultural heritage were allocated subsidies.
The educational project to create a reference guidebook on rare and hunting birds of Evenkia has received support. For indigenous peoples living in challenging environments distant from major population centres, hunting birds constitutes a pivotal component in their traditional use of natural resources. In addition to the hunting birds, Evenkia is home to approximately 40 species of rare birds. In order to preserve rare species and enhance environmental awareness among the local population, it is planned to distribute the guidebook among associations of indigenous peoples of the north, educational organisations and regional authorities. The book's objective is to synthesise scientific ornithological data and the practical knowledge of indigenous peoples in a natural way. The descriptions will include photographs, characteristics and details that make it easy to identify the bird in the field, as well as Evenki names and folk signs associated with each species.
The second project to receive funding is the Living Thread of the North, an ethnocultural initiative. The project will consolidate knowledge regarding the folklore, traditional crafts and ornamental art of the Evenks, presented in two formats: printed and digital. The illustrated album will provide insight into everyday life, customs and beliefs, and the craftspeople's know-hows. The digital version of the systematised data will form the basis for an educational platform dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Evenks and aimed at the younger generation and anyone interested in the ethnic groups of Eastern Siberia. The project coincides with the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and will make a significant contribution to strengthening intercultural dialogue.
One of the key areas of Rosneft's social policy is the support and preservation of the national cultures of the indigenous peoples of the North and their traditional way of life. The Company and its subsidiaries implement numerous social projects in the regions where they operate. These projects support the traditional way of life of indigenous peoples, develop educational initiatives and educate the younger generation.
For reference:
Rosneft's funding programme has been in operation for over a decade. During this time, the Company has provided support for 35 research, environmental and cultural education projects, including those focused on preserving the national culture and traditional way of life of the indigenous Evenkia population.
