Rosneft Supports Development of Khanty and Mansi Theatre Arts in Yugra

With the support of Samotlorneftegaz (Rosneft subsidiary), creative spaces dedicated to preserving and promoting the culture of the indigenous peoples of the North have been refurbished in Yugra. To commemorate World Theatre Day, celebrated on 27 March, the Solntse professional theatre and the Torum Maa open-air historical and ethnographic museum (which translates from the Khanty language as “Sacred Land”) have undergone a modernisation programme in Khanty-Mansiysk.

The stage area at the Solntse Theatre has been comprehensively refurbished. The new technical system has enabled directors and designers to bring more complex and ambitious creative projects to life. Modern equipment facilitates the rapid transformation of the stage, the creation of dynamic sets and the use of a wide range of special effects, from smooth lighting transitions to simulated rain and snow. Upgrading the theatre's facilities will make its performances more expressive and spectacular.

Thanks to Samotlorneftegaz, the theatre ensemble has been able to organise a touring programme to visit all districts of Yugra, including the most remote ethnic villages. The actors, who are representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North, introduce the audience to performances based on the folklore of the Ob Ugrians and works by contemporary authors. The Solntse Theatre is a regular participant in national and international festivals, including the Golden Mask, Arlequin and Mayatul.

The Torum Maa open-air ethnographic museum of Khanty and Mansi culture has undergone a series of modernisation works. The museum is located within the unique Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park. The Company has helped to establish a visitor centre that is equipped to host a variety of events, including seminars, masterclasses, educational sessions, lectures and theatrical performances based on traditions, national holidays and rituals. At the museum, the entrance area has been refurbished, the steep slopes of the hills have been stabilised, and the nature and cultural trails have been upgraded. These changes will broaden the audience for cultural and educational programmes and enable them to be tailored to different visitor groups.

The projects carried out have created favourable conditions for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Khanty and Mansi peoples, while also opening up new creative opportunities for developing theatre in the region.

For reference:

Samotlorneftegaz is one of Rosneft's most important production enterprises in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District—Yugra. The enterprise supports projects in the cultural, educational and awareness-raising spheres, as well as initiatives that aim to preserve traditional family values and develop children’s creative potential. For instance, Samotlorneftegaz sponsored the renovation of the Young Spectator Theatre in Nizhnevartovsk. Thanks to the project, the theatre building has been fitted out with modern equipment and new functional spaces for creative work have been created.
