Rosneft Expands Horizons in Geological Exploration
On the first Sunday in April, Rosneft joins the Russian geological community in celebrating the anniversary of Geologist’s Day. This professional holiday was established 60 years ago to honor the contribution of Soviet scientists to the development of the country’s mineral resource base.
Today, Rosneft’s geologists are also successfully assessing the resource potential of the subsoil and are actively expanding and bringing hydrocarbon reserves into production.
Thanks to the high efficiency of its exploration activities, the Company discovered 6 fields and 112 new hydrocarbon deposits in 2025, with reserves of 0.3 bln toe (AB1C1+B2C2 category). As a result, Rosneft’s hydrocarbon reserves, according to the Russian classification, amounted to 21.7 bln toe (AB1C1+B2C2 category) as of the end of 2025.
According to the results of a reserves audit conducted in accordance with the PRMS (Petroleum Resource Management System) international classification, the Company’s Category 2P hydrocarbon reserves amounted to 11.5 bln toe. The 2P reserve replacement ratio reached 122%, providing a reserve life of 49 years.
Recent geological achievements include the discovery of highly productive reservoirs in Vendian and Cambrian carbonate deposits in Eastern Siberia. The Severo-Danilovskoye and Lisovsky fields have been brought into commercial production, while additional potential has been unlocked at the Srednebotuobinskoye and Verkhnechonskoye fields.
The Company is actively pursuing a new exploration programme in the lower Jurassic formations in Western Siberia. Alongside new field discoveries, Rosneft is refining techniques for localizing high-margin reserves within Cretaceous and Jurassic formations.
In the Volga-Ural oil and gas province, the application of advanced enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods, digitalization of production and monitoring, and the implementation of intelligent well management systems have revitalized brownfield development. Geologists see significant further upside in the region through the exploration and development of Domanic deposits.
Since 2020, Rosneft has been conducting a unique stratigraphic drilling project in the Arctic. In under-explored sedimentary basins, 28 shallow stratigraphic wells have been drilled, yielding over 2,000 meters of core samples. For the first time, primary data has been obtained regarding the age of shelf rocks in the northern Kara Sea and the Eastern Arctic. This geological material is being analyzed using the modern laboratory facilities of Lomonosov Moscow State University, in collaboration with experts from leading Russian scientific institutions.
To further enhance well productivity, the Company continuously conducts pilot tests to increase horizontal lateral lengths and the frequency and volume of hydraulic fracturing stages. This includes a transition to the «plug & perf» completion system, allowing for up to 120 multi-cluster fractures per well. A total of 223 high-tech wells were commissioned, including 12 wells that are unique within the Russian oil industry for their combined technological parameters.
As part of its import substitution strategy, Rosneft has deployed domestic systems for reservoir modeling and geosteering, as well as data visualization and engineering calculation suites for drilling. Software for hydrodynamic well testing, petrophysical modeling, and hydrogeological design has also been implemented. Development is currently underway for software focused on seismic data interpretation, digital core analysis, and the modeling of hydrocarbon potential in sedimentary paleobasins.
In 2025, 260 of the Company’s geologists enhanced their skills through 19 professional training courses. Rosneft also hosted national competitions in well-drilling geological support and case championships in petrophysics, geology, and development.
Furthermore, Rosneft’s geological experts deliver specialized lectures to undergraduate and graduate students at leading sector-specific universities, transferring accumulated expertise and knowledge to the next generation of the country’s oil and gas professionals.
