Reindeer Herder's Day Held in the North of Krasnoyarsk Territory with the Support of RN-Vankor
As part of the annual Eco-Arctic Forum, supported by RN-Vankor (part of Rosneft's oil and gas complex), the national holiday, Reindeer Herder's Day, was celebrated in the villages of Nosok in the Taymyr Dolgano-Nenets District and Sovetskaya Rechka in the Turukhansk District of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
The Eco-Arctic Forum is an annual event that brings together initiatives with the aim of preserving the unique Arctic ecosystems and supporting the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of Taymyr. The highlight of the forum was Reindeer Herder's Day, a key event in the indigenous peoples of the North's annual calendar.
The festival was attended by around 500 reindeer herders from nearby settlements. A national costume contest, a display of decorative and applied arts, and a tasting of northern cuisine were held at the improvised ethnic venues. The highlight of the festival was the competitions in traditional wrestling, the throwing of the lariat over a khorei (a harness is thrown over a long pole used to chase reindeer), and jumping over the sleds, as well as the reindeer sledge races. The participants demonstrated the strength, agility and skill required for traditional farming. The event concluded with a concert featuring ethnic folk ensembles.
The village of Nosok is one of the largest indigenous settlements in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, where the traditional nomadic way of life is still practised. The village is home to over 1,500 people, nearly 90% of whom belong to indigenous minority groups — the Nenets, who lead a nomadic way of life. Sovetskaya Rechka is the only village in the Turukhansk District where members of the indigenous peoples — the Evenks and Selkups — continue to practise reindeer herding.
Preserving the traditional way of life of the indigenous communities living within the operational area of the enterprise is a key focus of the social policy of Rosneft's subsidiaries. Oil companies build housing for indigenous populations, develop infrastructure in northern settlements and support reindeer herding families. They also improve the material and technical bases of educational institutions, social facilities and healthcare institutions in areas inhabited by indigenous peoples of the North.
