FESRC, Rosatom and Norilsk Nickel Agree to Cooperate within Dual-Fuel Icebreaker Building
At the VI Eastern Economic Forum, the Far Eastern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center (FESRC), Rosatom and Nornickel signed an agreement of intent to cooperate for designing and building a diesel-LNG dual-fuel icebreaker.
The Agreement is made for the parties to participate in the delivery of federal-level objectives: implementation of investment projects in the Russian Arctic, development of infrastructure and increase of the cargo turnover of the Northern Sea Route, establishment of own LNG-icebreaker building facilities.
The icebreaker will serve to escort vessels operating at Nornickel's projects on the Taymyr Peninsula and in waters west of the Northern Sea Route. The plan is that the icebreaker power plant will be both diesel and gas-operated, which will ensure high environmental characteristics of the vessel.
Implementation of the Agreement will facilitate building LNG-icebreaker design and construction competencies across FESRC entities, expanding the portfolio of shipbuilding orders, and ensuring optimal utilization of Zvezda Shipyard's production facilities. The opportunity to build the LNG-icebreaker at Zvezda will make it possible to diversify the product range of the shipyard by adding a new type of vessels for operations along the Northern Sea Route. This will contribute to further development of the shipbuilding cluster in the Primorsky Territory, and will strengthen the position of the shipyard on the shipbuilding market.

Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is being created by the Consortium headed by Rosneft as assigned by Russian President V.V. Putin. To date, the shipyard has over 50 vessels in the backlog. The pilot load of the Complex is secured by Rosneft with its order for 28 vessels placed with the shipyard.
Zvezda’s product line will include vessels of up to 350 thousand ton deadweight, offshore platforms, nuclear icebreakers and ice-class vessels, large-capacity transport vessels, including gas-carriers, special-purpose vessels and other types of marine facilities with any degree of complexity, parameters or purposes, including facilities that have never been made in Russia before due to the lack of necessary loadout and hydraulic engineering structures.
Construction of the first nuclear icebreaker Leader (Project 10510) is already in progress at Zvezda. The vessel will be the most powerful nuclear ship in the history of the global shipbuilding industry. This project of extreme technical complexity has no analogues worldwide.
